Obituary of Lamar Cartwright

USAF (Ret.), 89, passed away August 10, 2010. Lamar C. Cartwright was born in Pottsville, PA to Christopher and Katie Yost Cartwright on July 20, 1921. He was one of six children. Before he joined the Air Force in 1942, Lamar was in the CCC camp in PA. Lamar had many interests over the years, and a great love for the military. He spent 14 months as a radio operator, mechanic, and gunner with the Flying Tigers, flying 61 combat missions out of Kunming, China. After the first 20 trips the plane was shot down and the eight man crew bailed out over the Himalayas. With the help of Chinese guerrillas, they walked out of the mountains in two weeks. Later they flew to Bangalore and picked up a new B-24 and finished the 61 missions. Lamar was credited with shooting down three Japanese zeroes. After winding up a four year tour in Japan, Lamar volunteered for Korea in 1952. The next two years he was at a remote Korean radio homing station for fighter pilots returning from the river Yul. Following this it was four years in Hawaii, two years in Alaska and four years in Germany. He helped put up large microwave towers all over Europe. While in Germany, he married Renata Kubik in Bremen in 1967. Their son Alan was born March 18, 1969. Lamar worked for the Denver Water Board for many years following his career with the Air Force. He also served for twenty years serving at the Food Bank of the Rockies. He led a full life defending and serving others. He was loved by his family and friends and be greatly missed!
