In 2015, our family left our comfortable house in Arkansas near John Brown University. There I had been a research assistant to Dr. Habermas, spent hours in the library with Mrs. Habermas, and attended church with them. I was a youth minister, and became a pastor to the elderly with a ministry called Kind at Heart Ministries. In Colorado we began attending Bear Valley Church, and I approached the leadership about helping with the elderly. I was told there was a visitation ministry, something that I had regularly done and loved to do. I was assigned Larry.
To prepare to meet him I read his bio and I realized that we had some things in common. He had been the Librarian at John Brown University...just before I arrived in Arkansas. Mrs. Habermas had worked with him. I knew suddenly that there was no coincidence, that some larger things were afoot, and I began praying.
Larry is one of the most remarkable people that I have ever met. My visitations with him were prayer meetings. He loved God and was passionate about missions. Everything I cared about became a huge focus of his prayer life. We would talk about Scripture, and we would talk about his past work and his future desires. He was suffering from dementia by the time I met him, but his hallucinations were often spirit filled. I would listen in fascination and careful attention. He wanted to be a pilot for our missionary work in Central America. He couldn't do that, but he was a prayer pilot and co-pilot as we began our ministry.
I knew when I met with him that I was with a hero of the faith. Someone who only a long steady life of seeking God could bring me to belong with. The more I learned of the life God had given him, the more convinced I became that God had granted him a time devoted to prayer, experienced in a way that others do not often get to. Whether in the Spirit or in dementia or both, his prayer life and life with God was vivid and transformational. God delighted to hear Larry's voice raised in prayer. To have he and Evelyn partner with our mission changed everything. Praying with him allowed our family to follow God into our calling, and visiting Larry also helped connect his immense Christian experience to a present ministry outlet. He was vital. I believe he is vital.
It is certain that He is with Christ, conducting choirs of saints and angels, and praying fervently for the fulfillment of our Great Commission. Praying fervently for his children and grand children. Praying fervently for his wife. Nothing interrupted Larry's devotion to life, godliness, family, or Christian purpose. Certainly his absence from his body and presence with Christ have increased his life, godliness, love of family, and dedication to the Church's mission. He was not silent or helpless in life, and in the presence of Christ will continue to serve. How fitting that we shall meet again in the air, in triumph, as the conclusion of everything his humble spirit was set apart for.
He has found his way upstairs to the hidden second floor. He will be on his knees in that upper room.

WOW! What can I say about one of the most Unique, Special, One of a kind, God's Special people I have ever met! Fortunately, Larry and I did get to say our final "Goodbyes" a few weeks before he left for Heaven! I think he had a premonition and we both felt good about the opportunity and left it that we would be together for ETERNITY IN HEAVEN! Well, he beat me there and I know he is so much better off and happier there. I was AMAZED at how well he handled those last several years with the shape he was in.
Larry accomplished so much in his earlier life as was so well pointed out in the FABULOUS Obituary! He must have mastered more than most ever do in a LONG LIFETIME or TWO or THREE LIFETIMES!
I don't know about you but I am exceptionally excited about getting to spend ETERNITY with Larry in HEAVEN. Thank you Jesus for having him with you in peace at this time. Blessings and Love to Larry and Evelyn.

It was an honor to care for Larry with compassus hospice. I truly enjoy the memories of singing Christmas Carols with him and laughing. My prayers are with you and the family during this difficult time.

A bundle of talent packed in energy and enthusiasm, Larry served the role of mentoring older brother for me in DC and friend and social chairman when we were in Princeton together. Always there for me, when I needed a lift, a compatriot, a double date when Linda and I could get together, or some flapjacks at The Pancake House, where he managed. Endlessly joyful, creative, and wise. Miss you. Rick

What a long and adventurous journey was his! Larry surely lived out the "great commandment" of Jesus --- he loved GOD and every person he met with all of his heart, mind, soul, and strength. Didn't seem to matter to Larry whether he was on stage at church or in the foyer of the nursing home. Whether times were good or bad, he always lit up when he saw a friend.
When Larry 's strength failed (too soon), he fought it and sneaked around it and pushed through it every way possible -- giving us a new definition of tenacity. Even without physical sight, Larry "saw" more value and lived more truth in every day he was given.
Now free of those pains, I imagine Larry to be the happiest fellow in heaven right now. We'll miss him but I salute him today, for a life well-lived and a battle well-fought. Go rest high on that mountain, my friend...

Yes, Larry was a multi-talented individual, as the obituary the family shared so eloquently describes. Yes, he was a committed Christian servant in every role he assumed. Yes, he was a convivial, welcoming person, though he could hold colleagues to high standards. But most of all I remember two things about Larry.
-- He was an innovator who wanted to bring everyone on board. He brought Central Seminary´s library into the digital age and pioneered distance learning technology (I still have the theology lectures of mine that he recorded). And he taught me -- a hopeless Luddite -- to use a computer (he had to explain the word processor´s scrolling function; I was looking for the "return," like on a typewriter carriage).
When Carol and I met Larry and Evelyn for an evening out, they had the first cellular phone we had ever seen -- a "bag phone" that plugged into the lighter outlet in the car -- "to keep up with Rebecca and David," who were teenagers at the time. We got our own phones right away; our kids were coming up behind the Blazer kids.
-- And Larry was funny! In recent years when he was in the care facility and struggling to stay oriented, we would share stories about our Central Seminary days and laugh and laugh. Larry was one of the diminishing cohort of long-time friends who called me by my youthful athletic moniker. "Wheels." And that made me laugh, too. I always felt better when I talked to Larry, even when his own circumstances were narrow and challenging.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of Larry.
