Obituary of Astra Silvija Ozols

Astra Silvija Ozols, born 30 September 1929 in Riga, Latvija passed away peacefully on 27 April 2020. She was the oldest daughter of Andrejs and Amalija Karklinš. In 1945 when the Soviets invaded Latvia, she escaped with her family to Germany where they landed in the Memmingen, Germany Displaced Person’s Camp. In 1950 she emigrated to the United States with her family via Boston, MA and eventually to Springfield, OH where she met her future husband Ojars K. Ozols. Having a soul for caregiving, she attended and graduated from Nursing School and worked in a Springfield, Ohio hospital for a few years.  Astra and Ojars wed on 10 September 1955 in Springfield, OH. Her most cherished and proudest memories were of serving as a U.S Army officer’s wife, living and traveling to various international cities and raising her four boys. She experienced a 23 year military life in places such as Fort Campbell, KY; Augsburg, Bamberg, Neu-Ulm, and Mannheim, Germany and Virginia Beach, VA while enduring the hardships of raising her sons with her husband gone at numerous times on military maneuvers, and overseas deployements that included South Korea, Lebannon and South Vietnam. Upon her husband’s retirement from the military in 1973, she moved the family to Broomfield, CO where she successfully raised her four boys through high school, piano lessons (not their favorite) and all four obtaining college degrees. Astra is survived by her sister Rita Spulgis, and her four sons, Ojars (“Mickey”), Raimond, Victor and Karl along with eight grands kids, and 11 grand kids. She loved tending her garden, entertaining guests at home and playing Bridge with friends. We wish her peace in heaven with her husband and other family and friends.
