Obituary of John Paul McCullough

July 28, 1974 – June 1, 2021

John Paul McCullough, an amazing son, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend passed peacefully in his Colorado home at the age of 46 on June 1, 2021. John was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. He was known professionally as John, befriended by others as Pope, forever bonded to close friends as Pablo, familiar to immediate family as JP and John Paul, and lovingly called JohnaPaula by his mama.

John’s story starts on July 28, 1974, the 3 rd of 4 children to Jack McCullough and Edye McCullough. John was born in Grand Island, NE. He shared his childhood with his sister and two brothers, laughing, playing, vacationing, getting in trouble together, covering for each other, and just doing day-to-day life. He enjoyed spending summers with cousins and grandparents fishing, swimming, hanging in the “Winnebago,” dragging main, riding horses, going to the old bridge, jumping the cliffs, track & field, rugby, 4x4ing, SNL nights, “The Animals,” and snipe hunting.

John graduated from Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado. After a few years of working for Perennial Lawn and Landscape, he went to Antarctica to work for Antarctic Support Associates. He worked there for three seasons. One of the highlights of his life, he also was able to visit the South Pole and New Zealand. On his return, he graduated with an A/P maintenance degree from Westwood College of Aviation Tech in August 2001. He pursued a career building, servicing, and overseeing quality control for helicopter air conditioning units at Air Comm Corporation in Boulder, CO.

Young John played rugby and helped coach rugby from time to time. Older John enjoyed grilling, camping, road trips, and hammocking. More recently when he found his movement more limited, he found interest in horseback riding and bicycling. He worked hard to train with his bike and completed the Great Cycle Challenge in 2017.

John enjoyed travel and was able to visit several places. Hawaii, the Caribbean, Australia, Mexico, and several destinations in the United States. His adventurous side found him skydiving with friends and family on several occasions. John’s love for airplanes followed him from his young years into his adult life. He enjoyed working with the two large remote control planes that he owned.

A special love for him was following the Broncos. He was forever grateful to attend games and was a passionate tailgater!

Loved ones that preceded John in death were his father Jack McCullough, paternal grandparents John and Violet McCullough, maternal grandparents Clarence Walters and Rod & Jean Higgins, uncles Artie Walters, Jim McCullough and Jerry McCullough, and Aunt Carol McCullough Claassen. Loved ones missing John today are his mother Edye (Earl Grice) McCullough, sister Margo (Dave) Campion, brother Marcus McCullough, Joe (Kyle Walker) McCullough, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, family, and friends.

John Paul, we love you and miss you. Journey safely & peacefully, with boundaries unchallenged.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by All Veterans Burial & Cremation. A Celebration of Life for John will be open to family & friends on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
