To the Korte family,
Merle and my dad (Frank Martin) served together in WWII. My dad always spoke about his close friend and shared several fond memories about Merle. Josh (my nephew) went to visit Merle after my dad passed away and he related several stories about their time at sea. He told Josh about the time he had to jump in the water to rescue my dad from a jellyfish attack. Makes sense, I’m sure my dad was quite naïve about the ocean and the inherent danger that were in the water. I also remember dad telling the story when they landed in Hawaii and tasted pineapple for the first time. He also made the grave mistake of eating too much and paid the price with open soars around his mouth.
I’m sure Merle and my father are having a great time now catching up on their lives and reminiscing about the time they shared in the Navy.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Korte family. Families are forever and we will be with them again.

I was saddened to see the announcement of Merle's passing in the Denver Post. I had the privilege of working with Merle at the Meadows GC in the early 2000's. Working a shift with Merle was always an adventure! However, one day was very special and has stayed with me all these years. Merle and I were working a close shift, and during the evening lull of waiting for golfers to finish their rounds, Merle shared with me stories and pictures from his time in the Navy during WWII. He told me of arriving at Nagasaki...tears still rolled down his cheeks at the memory. And I can still clearly see a picture of Merle and fellow shipmates celebrating the news of the end of the war. They all were so young!! My time working with Merle, and this special day that he shared with me, made me a better, more compassionate person. I have been able to see past age and think about all the experiences that people have, and how these experiences shape the people we become.
My grandparents, parents, and parents-in-law are all resting peacefully at Ft Logan National Cemetery. It will by my honor to pay my respects to Merle during my frequent visits.
Respectfully,
Kathy Meacham
