My condolences. I had the very great fortune to work with Dick during his efforts with standards. I got to work with him to bring his vision to fruition on distributed generation and smart grid standards, even when the cards were stacked against him. He inspired people to do their best and be impactful. He led by example and was dedicated and hard working. He was a great friend, leader, and mentor. He will be greatly missed.

Richard was an Engineer's Engineer, and a devoted champion of consensus standards governing the energy industry. At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, I worked in an office two doors down from his, and had the pleasure of almost daily interactions with him for many years. He inspired my own professional career with his examples of dedicated hard work to integrate renewable energy into the national economy. He was also a highly capable manager, and mentor, not to just his colleagues but to an entire professional community. His contributions, apparent to that community, though unknown by the general population, served the entire nation and worldwide renewable energy community to degree hard to imagine or comprehend. It was an honor to work with him. His family mourns the most of all, but his colleagues very deeply as well. Thank you for sharing him with us.
