Obituary of Herman Aaron Ratner

Herman Aaron Ratner, Attorney at Law, was born on March 30, 1931, in the Bronx, NY, to Phillip and Elizabeth Ratner.

An only child, his parents were always extremely proud of his scholastic achievements. Herman attended New York University, where he majored in Law and American History. After graduating, he went to University of Denver Law School.

His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Army after the Korean War. Herman was a devoted patriot and wore his uniform with pride and honor while he served in SCARWAF (Special Category Army with Air Force). Subsequent to two years of active duty, and four years in the Reserves, Herman was honorably discharged.

He returned to University of Denver, where he finished his Law degree and was admitted to the bar in 1958. He began his career as an attorney in Denver, then moved to Colorado Springs, where in 1961 he served as Deputy District Attorney and Legal Aid Attorney under District Attorney Don Higby. Following a successful career in the DA’s office, Herman opened his private practice in 1965.

In March of 1980, Herman met the great love of his life, Eileen L. Bell. He loved and was deeply honored to be in the lives of Eileen and her three daughters, Michelle, Teresa, and Janine.

Later in his life, Herman became a licensed pilot. He logged more than 1000 hours and absolutely loved every minute of it. In his own words, he felt the most alive when he was in the air. He also was a 4th Degree Mason.

Herman, was lovingly referred to as “Baba” by his four grandchildren, Alexandria, Rachel, Matthew, and Jennifer, and his two great granddaughters Isabella and Elena.

In retirement, Herman and Eileen’s favorite pastime was cruising around the world.

On the morning of April 29, 2023, at 7:20am, Herman was admitted into the gates of heaven. He was a man of impeccable character, dignity, and generosity. He was a wonderful son, partner, friend, Baba, Great Grand-Baba, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family requests no flowers, and if so inclined, any and donations can be made in Herman’s honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Research: StJude.org/donate.

Finally, the family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Life Care Center of Colorado Springs and Compassus Hospice Care for their love and care for our Herman.
